  • This summer has been really strange.  I was at home for three weeks, subbing at an elementary school, then six weeks of class, a week at home, then a week at camp, and then another week at home, a trip to Knoxville, and now back home again, and heading back to Knoxville on Sunday.

I loved getting to work at camp for a week.  The friends I have there are some of the best friends I will probably ever have, people who know me so well that it's a little bit scary.  It's nice to go somewhere and have people excited to see you and hang out with you.

My internship starts next week.  I am SO excited, I can't wait to meet the kids and get started.  However, I know it's going to be a ton of work, and once it starts, it's really not going to slow down until next June.  But I am still SO excited.  :)

    Hope you're all doing well.

  • Well, it finally happened....

....I locked myself out of my apartment on Friday.  Wearing no shoes.  I stepped out into the hallway to see what someone wanted and closed the door behind me...which was locked.  Luckily, Angela was in her room so I could use her phone and the nice people from Plant Services came and unlocked it for me.  It was bound to happen eventually, since I'm the only one with a key.

Today I learned that if things don't go the way they are supposed to at Sonic, you get free stuff.  I went during Happy Hour (yay for 1/2 priced drinks!) and ordered a diet vanilla coke.  That's it...no food or anything.  And over 30 minutes later, I still had no drink.  The bad part was that I had just gone grocery shopping, so I had milk and popsicles with me.  So my groceries are getting hot, it's stifling outside, and I have no drink.  I finally flagged down a carhop, and she quickly got my drink, apologized profusely, and asked if I would like a milkshake.  Now, I don't know about you, but free milkshakes are great.  She brings me a milkshake, and then tells me that the charge for my drink will be taken off my card.  So, I got a free drink and a free milkshake, which was almost worth sitting in the car for that long.

I'm pretty much addicted to the outdoors...I just can't stay inside.  I'm actually getting a tan for the first time in at least four summers.  I would probably be outside right now if I didn't have a 20 page article to read entitled "Motivation and Its Relationship With Reading Achievement in an Urban Middle School."

Crossings was great on Sunday.  Trevor spoke for part of it, and really said some things that hit home with me.  I really appreciate that church.

Hope you are all doing wonderfully.

    What comes next?

Statistics class is over...a few things to turn in for that class, but plenty of time to get them done in.  Research design starts on Monday, and it doesn't look like it's going to be too bad.  I appreciate professors who understand teacher ed students - the fact the we need to know exactly how they want things, the fact that we hate ambiguity.  It's been typical teacher ed around here, jumping through lots of hoops.  Like fingerprinting and drug testing.  That was a lot of fun, trust me.

I like my apartment, and I like being on campus because it's so peaceful during the summer.  I'm even enjoying living by myself, for the most part.  I've started to catch myself this week being a hermit, and then I have to make myself go outside.  I like cooking for myself, but it's not so much fun to eat by myself.  Kinda depressing, actually.  But I'll live.

I helped Leslie's older brother and his new wife move into their new apartment.  Trust me on this one, move into your apartment before you get married, as opposed to after.  It will improve your stress level drastically.  They had just gotten back from their honeymoon, their flights were canceled coming back to IN, so they had to wait an extra day, then get back, load everything up, and Brandon had to drive a 24 foot truck with a trailer attached to it by himself, since Jenny had to drive her car.  But Mike and I managed to get them mostly unloaded before we had to leave.  It's going to be great to have them so close.

So what does come next?  I know that I have a whole year here, but after that, I don't really know.  And it bothers me that I don't know.  I probably won't be going back to Indiana.  Anyone who knows me pretty much knows that.  I think that I need to get away from Indiana for at least a couple of years.  And, I won't have taken all the required PRAXIS tests to teach there.  Honestly, I would rather not think about having to taking another PRAXIS test and spend all that money.  Knox County is apparently not going to be a good place to teach, because they are in a fiscal crisis.  I will have taken all the tests for TN and KY (but there's a few things I would have to look into about getting a KY teaching license).  Honestly, I could go anywhere, and I think that's what's making this so difficult.  Right now, I don't have a clue.  And I guess that's ok.  I know that things will fall into place, eventually.

Just for fun, here's some pictures of me when I was little.  I was a cute kid.

I hope that you are all doing ok, if you aren't here at JBC, I probably miss you!

  • Today I had the opportunity to be a part of the wedding of two of my best friends.

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Sean Ealey!  Thanks for letting me be a part of your special day.
